The early 2000s saw Spears in crop tops with bell sleeves, baby tees worn under shearling coats, low-rise flare jeans, and fringe pieces in multicolor hues. What’s unique to Spears are the elements of ’70s boho style that wove their way into many of her looks, although always with a Y2K spin. What’s less talked about is how Spears popularized a number of trends that now define Y2K style, like the bubblegum vibrancy of the color palette and bedazzled, glitter-strewn embellishments. More than two decades later, the stylist says working with Spears was one of her wildest, most fun projects. Still, the video was completed, and ended up birthing one of Spears's most acclaimed videos-bouffant ponytail and all. “But she was a trooper and went right back to work,” recall Stanley. “She had a very intense day, to say the least.” “After one take, I unzipped her, and it literally looked like a bucket of water poured out of this jumpsuit,” she says. The stylist’s fears were (partially) realised. They turned to Michael Bush, a costume designer that was doing all of Spears’s custom tour looks at the time, to make something exciting for Spears.
